An action RPG where you chain synergy attacks with Tifa and Aerith while challenging Queen's Blood card players across sprawling open-world zones.

Last reviewed: May 3, 2026
Released Feb 2024 Singleplayer / Atmospheric / Fantasy

Despite a bare-minimum PC port, FF7 Rebirth's 100-hour follow-up to Remake holds its own — Queen's Blood alone could eat 20 hours.

Mighty

For you if

  • You played Remake and want to see Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith hit the open world
  • You enjoy Synergy materia and synergy ability combat plus 100+ hours of side content
  • You're OK with bloat — Queen's Blood card game alone could eat 20 hours

Not for you if

  • You skipped Remake — Rebirth's recap is light, you'll miss key plot context
  • You don't have a PS5 or a PC meeting the moderate-to-high specs Square requires
  • You hate massive open-world JRPGs and prefer linear 30-hour stories
What players love

Emotionally gripping story and refined combat system keep players invested across multiple playthroughs.

What frustrates them

Excessive open-world padding, minigames, and collectibles bloat the experience, even for devoted fans.

Is the FF7 Rebirth PC port good?

FF7 Rebirth's PC port (January 2025) is a 'bare minimum' port — three preset levels (Low/Medium/High), most options are binary toggles, no ultrawide aspect ratio support out of the box, and no DLSS Frame Generation. But raw performance is strong: ~83 FPS at 4K, ~128 FPS at 1440p, ~152 FPS at 1080p on max settings with capable hardware. Traversal stutter and frame spikes happen in the open world. Steam Deck players should expect 30 FPS at low preset.

Should I play FF7 Remake before Rebirth?

Highly recommended but technically optional. Rebirth has a 'Story So Far' menu option recapping Remake plus an in-game prologue that hits the highlights. Without playing Remake, you'll miss the modern characterizations of Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa, and Aerith — and the timeline-divergence mechanic that drives Rebirth's third act will land flat. Save data from Remake doesn't carry character progression, but it grants a Leviathan Summon Materia bonus in Rebirth.

How long does it take to beat FF7 Rebirth?

Main story takes 30-40 hours for focused players, 40-50 hours for a normal pace. Full 100% completion (every Queen's Blood card mastered, every minigame, every chocobo type, every side quest) lands at over 100 hours, with completionists clocking 150+. Queen's Blood — the in-game collectible card game — alone can absorb 20+ hours if you go for the rank-up content. Set realistic side-quest budgets early; the open zones snowball fast.

What are the best Synergy Materia combinations in FF7 Rebirth?

Synergy Materia unlocks at Cosmo Canyon for 80 Data Points from Chadley. It pairs with attack magic materia to trigger free first-tier abilities every time the active character spends ATB — best paired with Comet (huge AoE, knockback, non-elemental), Quake (Petrify chance), Thunder/Aero (instant-hit reliable), or paired Fire+Ice (auto-picks the weaker element). Combine with Aerith's Arcane Ward or Red XIII's Supernal Fervor for stacking free spells.

Is FF7 Rebirth a sequel to FF7 Remake?

FF7 Rebirth is the second installment of Square's three-part remake of the 1997 PS1 classic. Remake (2020) covered the Midgar opening; Rebirth (2024) covers the journey from outside Midgar through the Forgotten Capital; a third game is in development to finish the story. The originals were turn-based ATB; the new trilogy uses real-time action with command-strategic pauses. Story remains broadly faithful to 1997 but with deliberate modern reframings.
