Diablo IV
Shred packs with a Warlock hex chain, let the loot filter cut the noise, then push a deeper Pit tier for the item that rewrites your build.
Skip the $49.99 Standard button — the $69.99 Age of Hatred Collection adds both expansions for twenty dollars more. The 2026 repairs are free either way.
For you if
- Bouncing off the 2023 endgame is your history — the loot filter, map overlay, Pit overhaul, level-70 cap and redesigned skill trees all landed free
- Seasonal ARPGs are a habit you keep: Season 14, Season of Death Awakening, went live on 30 June 2026
- The Paladin, Warlock or Spiritborn is what you actually want — those classes are the part you pay for
Not for you if
- Offline play is non-negotiable: Blizzard requires an internet connection and a Battle.net account, Game Pass copies included
- Paying twice stings — Vessel of Hatred still sells standalone for $69.99, the same price as the Collection that contains it and the base game
- Seasonal churn wears you down: progress resets into each new seasonal realm, and the current one started on 30 June 2026
Three years of repairs finally arriving at once. Players who stayed through every season say the endgame is the best it has been.
Paying again. Skills behind an expansion paywall is the complaint that recurs most, followed by an endgame they still call grindy and unbalanced.

What critics say
- PCGamesN
With evil seemingly vanquished for now, a reworked endgame that really does have everything you need, and eight unique, exciting classes, I'm not sure where Blizzard goes from here.

I can easily see Lord of Hatred becoming one of the most beloved expansions in the Diablo franchise.
Before You Play
Refreshed monthlyWhat do you actually get for Diablo 4's $49.99 base price in 2026?
The original campaign and the launch class roster — and almost nobody should buy it. Steam sells the Age of Hatred Collection for $69.99, and that is the base game plus both expansions: Vessel of Hatred, which adds Nahantu and the Spiritborn, and Lord of Hatred, which adds Skovos, the Paladin, the Warlock, the Horadric Cube and War Plans. Twenty dollars over the Standard Edition buys three years of content. The trap on the same page is Vessel of Hatred sold on its own at $69.99 — identical money to the Collection, for one expansion instead of two, when the $39.99 Lord of Hatred already contains it. The default button is the worst value on the store page.

Do you need to buy Lord of Hatred to get Diablo 4's 2026 overhaul?
No. Blizzard splits patch 3.0.0 into two columns, and the one headed "Available across full game regardless of realm or expansion ownership" holds the changes people left over: the level-70 cap, itemization updates, the Loot Filter, Map Overlay, Pathfinding, the Pit overhaul and added Torment tiers. Blizzard also states that "all class skill trees have been redesigned for all players". What money buys is content, not repairs — the Lord of Hatred campaign, the Paladin and Warlock, the Skovos region, War Plans, Echoing Hatred, the Horadric Cube and Talismans. So if you bounced off the endgame or the loot, the fix is free.

Is Diablo 4 pay to win in 2026?
Not through the shop or the Battle Pass. Blizzard describes the free Reliquary track as weapon appearances, Platinum, a mount and a Town Portal cosmetic, with the premium tiers adding armour sets, mounts, a pet and a mount trophy — appearance items and currency, not power. The purchase that genuinely raises your ceiling is the expansion, because that is where the Paladin, the Warlock, the Horadric Cube and Talismans live. Worth knowing which complaint is which: long-haul players objecting to "putting skills behind a paywall" are objecting to the expansion, not to the season pass.

Does Diablo 4 still need an internet connection and a Battle.net account?
Yes, with no offline mode, and this has not softened. Blizzard states plainly that an "Internet connection and Battle.net account required to play", and Steam's system requirements list a broadband connection at both minimum and recommended. The Game Pass route is no different — you still link a Battle.net account before the game will launch. Two consequences worth planning around: there is no way to play on a flight or a bad connection, and outages take the single-player campaign down with everything else.

Is Diablo 4 in 2026 still the game that was reviewed at launch?
Structurally, no — which is why the 2023 reviews are the worst way to decide. Since then: two expansions, Vessel of Hatred in October 2024 and Lord of Hatred in April 2026; a skill-tree redesign; a level-cap change to 70; a rebuilt Pit; a loot filter; and a reworked endgame. PCGamesN's Lord of Hatred review calls the endgame "the best it's been", while being blunt about the road there: Blizzard "has struggled to really find its feet with D4, be it with somewhat lackluster seasons, missing features, and a general stagnation around the ARPG's endgame". Any review dated 2023 describes an endgame that no longer exists.
