Fewer than one in four, and the drop-off has a clear shape. Steam publishes global achievement rates, and BG3's story milestones read as a staircase: 89.2% of owners escape the nautiloid prologue, 50.4% leave Act 1, 39.7% leave Act 2, and 23.5% hold the completion achievement. So the tutorial is not the barrier — almost everyone clears it. The fall happens across Act 1, and again at the Act 2 boundary, which is where the game hands you the city. Read that as a running-time warning rather than a quality one: this is a 73-hour main story, and most people who buy it are choosing to stop somewhere in the middle rather than bouncing off the opening.

Bug fixes only, and even those come sporadically. Larian titled its 15 April 2025 update "The Final Patch" and said Patch 8 would be the last to introduce new content — then shipped eight further hotfixes, ending with Hotfix #36 on 26 March 2026, which repaired crashes caused by an unannounced February patch that had itself fixed save corruption. Larian's own Community Update called Patch 8 "the last final, final last patch", which tells you how firm the first announcement was. On 25 July 2026 the studio again said it is not involved in any new Baldur's Gate projects. No new story, companions or subclasses are coming.

Improved, and later than most people realise — but Larian has never claimed it is solved. Hotfix #34, on 23 September 2025, added a native Steam Deck build, and Larian said the underlying work "means that everyone will get to enjoy overall improvements to the way game models are streamed on all platforms, which should reduce framerate spikes in busy areas, such as the Lower City in Act 3". Note the hedge: should reduce. That shipped five months after the update Larian had called its last. A February 2026 patch then fixed save corruption blocking the Act 2 to Act 3 transition. If you played at launch and gave up in the city, the version on sale now is not the one you quit.

Barely, and waiting has never paid. It is $59.99 on Steam today at 0% off — the same price it launched at in 2023. Its deepest Steam discount ever was $44.99, 25% off, in a promotion running to 8 September 2025; before that the record was $47.99 at 20% off. A game three years old holding full list price is unusual enough to be a buying fact in itself, and it means the usual advice of waiting for a 75% cut simply does not apply here. The only paid add-on is a $9.99 Digital Deluxe pack of cosmetics and the soundtrack, which adds no content.

No to both, and the rules barrier is smaller than its reputation. The game is set roughly 120 years after Baldur's Gate II and tells a standalone story, so the earlier games are recognition rather than requirement. On the D&D side, PCGamesN argues the gatekeeping is misplaced: "If you've played modern XCOM games, you're likely going to be au fait with the basics of combat in BG3." The one system where prior tabletop knowledge genuinely helps is multiclassing, and that is entirely optional — you can complete the game on a single class without ever opening it.
